Costs
The overall financial cost of the programme varies depending on your chosen location so it is important to check out the summaries below or on the individual location pages. We aim to give you a clear idea of the finances that you will need but in some cases the prices are the best estimate available at the time and may vary (especially airfares). Where prices are quoted in $US the sterling equivalent will be dependent on exchange rates at the time. The ones quoted here are intended to give you a guide based on the exchange rate £1 = $1.5 US.
We do ask that you will have all the money or promise of it before you leave for location.
This is an explanation of what you will need to pay for:
- Application Fee: £25 for all locations. This is a non-refundable payment to cover processing your application and needs to be paid when you submit your main application form.
- Orientation week, Debrief week & Administration: £395 for all locations. This payment covers administration, your orientation and debriefing weeks, the running of the YFG desk at Holmsted and communication costs. £200 is payable when you receive your acceptance letter and the £195 balance can be paid either before or at the orientation week.
- Travel and Medical Insurance: Basic cover costs approximately £460.00 for UK Nationals and £385.00 for non UK Nationals. You are free to arrange your own travel insurance but it is essential for the year. We have a link with an excellent health insurer that only provides insurance for missionaries working overseas. This covers everything we think you might need insuring. You would require additional cover for expensive items such as laptops or valuable digital cameras.
- Immunisations and Medical Equipment: These may vary according to what you may have already had or need for your chosen locations. You will need to arrange these through your doctor.
- Visas/Student Pass: These costs will vary depending where you are travelling from or to. Some sort of visa will be required for all locations and for travelling to the UK if you are from outside Europe. We will advise you as to what you will need to obtain and help in the application process.
- CRB check: A Criminal Records Bureau check is required for all location.
- Airfare: This is an approximate cost of a one-year return to your chosen location. We research the best prices and dates and try to synchronise flights with other participants. Because a one year return is normally around £450 more than a 6-9 month return we recommend buying the cheaper ticket and changing the departure date at your location as this usually costs around £200.
- DTS and Placement Fees: Again these vary according to location. These cover your food, accommodation, teaching and related travel for the three-month DTS lecture phase and the two to three month DTS outreach. (Singapore is self-catering, but an estimated cost for food is included in the budget).
- Personal expenses: These cover laundry, toiletries, communication home, social expenses etc. These will vary from person to person, but an estimate of £10 per week is normally plenty. Living in most locations is relatively inexpensive; however if you wish to explore the country in your free time, allow for more. You will also need to budget for ongoing expenses at home, such as national insurance contributions (UK nationals), private pension, mortgage repayments etc.
